I recently obtained a Claude Gordon Selmer #000353. Can someone approximately date the horn? Are you sure it's a 1973 horn? What is its serial number?
I ask because I'm not sure myself what year the CG Benge became available and I'm trying to find out.Best wishes,John MohanTrumpet Player, Clinician & Teacher1st Trpt for Cats, Phantom of the Opera, West Side Story, Evita, Hunchback of Notre Dame,Grease, The Producers, Addams Family, Color Purple, In the Heights, etc.Ex LA Studio Musician16 Year Claude Gordon StudentslantwsRegular MemberJoined: 15 Dec 2010Posts: 38Posted: Tue Aug 09, 2011 7:15 am Post subject:John Mohan wrote:Nice find!I saw the pictures of your CG Benge as well. However, I am doubting that is the case.
The Dallas Music Benge page mentions the CG Benge first appearing in 1976. But, the list under 10,000 at shows two 'CG' horns as 1972s. Also, in the Benge serial number list at indicates the year for my horn would be about 1980-or so.Regards, Jerry1941 Martin HC Committee1947 Besson Meha1947 Buescher 2051952 Getzen Super Deluxe1970s CG Benge1980s CG Selmer (2)2013 Schilke Handcraft HC2cybershakeHeavyweight MemberJoined: 16 Jan 2006Posts: 723Posted: Thu Feb 09, 2012 8:16 pm Post subject:estimated date of production for #910?just picked this one up in december 2011 in cincinnati, ohio. Absolutely great playing horn.
The bell shows evidence of damage in multiple areas, especially just above the crook (in picture below, i'm talking about the bell near the support brace behind the valves), but it plays so well that i don't think i'll replace it or see if someone can smooth it out. I guess that is the risk of such a lightweight horn.BlaineAdams A4 LT-SMarcinkiewicz Rembrandt Four-XMarcinkiewicz Rembrandt Rick Braun Model Four-XRomeo Adaci ReferenzLast edited by cybershake on Sun May 20, 2012 12:39 pm; edited 1 time in totalJohn MohanHeavyweight MemberJoined: 13 Nov 2001Posts: 9613Location: Chicago, IllinoisPosted: Thu Feb 09, 2012 10:30 pm Post subject:Beautiful! Mixed feelings about those valve caps - were the original 'wafer-thin' ones included in the sale? Either way, that's a very small gripe. You did great.
By the way, my first CG Selmer is serial number 000927 if I remember correctly (too lazy to go to the closet and check). That makes them close cousins, if not outright siblings.cybershakeHeavyweight MemberJoined: 16 Jan 2006Posts: 723Posted: Fri Feb 10, 2012 11:14 am Post subject:John Mohan wrote:Beautiful! A few weeks ago, someone in this newsgroup was asking how to interpretConn serial numbers. I had saved the following items from the horndiscusssion list a few months ago and am posting them now.

I was trying to help a friend of mine figure out a serial number on his 8D,too. His doesn't have the letters in front either, & I know it is an olderhorn.
Mine is a '79. The repairman who works on my middle schoolinstruments told me how to find out what MY serial number meant, so I'llrelate that.
From article, by(Peter Macdonald): A few weeks ago, someone in this newsgroup was asking how to interpret Conn serial numbers. etc. Second character (letter) indicates month of year, 'A' for January, 'B' for February, etc. I bought my 8D.new. in 1983 or 1984.
The serial number is 6 digitslong with no letters, so obviously the above code system does not applyto my horn. Any clues??Helen ReadBryan Higgins22.06.95 0:00. Any clues??Helen ReadI believe this is wrong. My 8D was made in the sixties and starts with M.-Bryan Higgins, Berkeley California(, )ccc.@showme.missouri.edu@missouri.edu23.06.95 0:00.
